More Than a Group

“Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence win championships." — Michael Jordan

In today's ever-evolving corporate landscape, it's not just about assembling a team of experts — it's about nurturing the right team dynamics. ✨

While individual skills and experiences are crucial, effective teaming behaviors are what truly defines a high-performing team. Simply having a roster of top talent doesn't guarantee success.

My upcoming class “Radically Aligned Teams: Forge diverse strengths into an engine for growth” will help leaders understand and put into practice specific methods and mindsets to promote efficiency and effectiveness. And it all starts with psychological safety, trust, and respect. 🤝

I mention “diverse strengths” in the subtitle because diversity is a strength. Without it, we get generic solutions rather than breakthrough innovation.

But diversity comes with a cost as well as an opportunity. When we speak to people who come from similar backgrounds to ourselves, we’re less likely to be misunderstood. So homogenous teams go through Tuckman’s Stages of Group Development (forming, storming, norming, performing) more quickly and with less friction.

Teams that include people that have people with a wide variety of experiences and perspectives need to be deliberate about how they grow and maintain trust and psychological safety — something that a study by Google has identified as the primary determinant of team effectiveness.

When individuals feel safe to voice opinions, share ideas, and navigate conflict in a healthy manner, they not only drive innovation, but also amplify outcomes through their combined strengths. You can only unlock your team’s true potential when members possess complementary views and a shared foundation of trust.

Teams don't just work based on talent alone, but on the collaborative environment they cultivate together.
